Find out moreSwapna Haddow was the winner of the Greenhouse Funny prize 2014. She is the author of the Dave Pigeon books, including How to Deal with Bad Cats and Keep (Most of) your Feathers and a further one, coming in 2017. Lin is seriously cute, even for a panda. In fact, she’s the sort of cute that reduces everyone to inarticulate cooing and desperate requests for cuddles. It’s part of the genius of Haddow’s book that lots of small children will identify with that, and with Lin’s utter disgust at this response! When she’s sent away from her brother and best friend Face-Like-A-Bag-Of-Potatoes to a different zoo, and advertised as The World’s Fluffiest Panda, Lin flips: she’ll do anything to get back. Her plan, in which she is ably assisted by new friend Fu, involves being so bad the keepers will have to send her home. Readers will love Lin’s comic adventures and race through the story. Sheena Dempsey’s two-colour illustrations are as lively as Lin, and the story often slips into comic strip, making it super-readable as well as super-fun.

The pet shop is full of new friends... Jet the dog, Cricket Ball Face the hamster... and with friendship comes a bit of healthy competition, and what could be better that a race for a racing pigeon? But the only animal who thinks Dave is capable of going up against the infamous Mickey Lightning is Dave himself.
In a nutshell: pigeontastic comedy capers with Dave and Skipper | Things are not looking good for pigeons Dave and Skipper. The Human Lady who feeds them has gone on holiday leaving them easy prey to the devious Reginald Grimster, a man with an irrational hatred of pigeons dating back to his schooldays (a pigeon pooed on him). Soon Skipper is a prisoner, along with lots of other pigeons, as Grimster gets ready to turn them into nuggets. Narrated by Dave, with frequent interjections by Skipper, this is totally nutty, totally original and a hoot from start to finish. With frequent illustrations, and pages of speech bubble dialogue it’s particular fun for gaining reading confidence. Don’t stop the pigeon! ~ Andrea Reece
