LoveReading View on Snowboy and the Last Tree Standing

Glimmering with power and hope, two acclaimed picture book makers come together to tell the story of what happens when a boy is brave enough to stand up for what he feels is right.

Birgitta Sif’s evocative fairy-tale illustrations and Hiawyn Oram’s fable-like story make this ecological moral both memorable and moving. Snowboy is playing in the forest when Greenbackboy arrives and suggests they play KA-CHING instead. Snowboy agrees but soon realises he doesn’t like the game, which involves cutting down all the trees.  Greenbackboy is thrilled to get piles of KA-CHING in return but Snowboy is worried: without trees we can’t breathe.  His concern increases when Greenbackboy heads for the ocean to catch all the fish. Fortunately Snowboy manages to put things right and it’s a tale of salvation and hope. Sif uses patches of glowing light to guide the narrative and the book is beautiful to look at and filled with quirky characters. Andrea Reece

But Snowboy recognizes the importance of life in the natural world around him and, in this evocatively told tale, has to trust his instinct to protect, rather than destroy...
