Interest Age 5-8 |

Rose's Dress of Dreams reads like a wonderful fairy tale; the little girl who dreams of beautiful dresses and spends her time drawing designs for fanciful frocks (much to the amusement of her family) grows up to create couture for Paris royalty. In fact Katherine Woodfine's dreamy tale is based up on the life of Rose Bertin, a pioneer of fashion in the court of Marie Antoinette. Rose's dresses are breathtaking works of art, using the finest materials and jewels and lashing of imagination...but first she must serve out her time as an apprentice. Despite the hard work and exhaustion Rose never lets go of her dream. The book is dressed with colourful and ornate artwork from Kate Pankhurst.

More About This Book

Katherine Woodfine says:  I’m so delighted to be joining Barrington Stoke’s wonderful Little Gems list, with this story inspired by the real-life Rose Bertin. As soon as I discovered Rose’s story, I was captivated by the idea of this determined young girl, forging a new path for herself in 18th century Paris – and going on to change the course of fashion history. I’ve long been an admirer of Kate Pankhurst’s gorgeous illustrations and I’m thrilled to have the chance to work with her.

Kate Pankhurst adds:  I’m a huge fan of Katherine’s writing, she has such a talent for creating a sense of history and place in her stories, so I jumped at the chance to illustrate this title. Historical fiction is such a great way for young readers to explore the past and I’m particularly looking forward to recreating Katherine’s vivid descriptions of the stunning fashions seen in France in the late 1700s.

A Piece of Passion from Emma Hargrave, Editor :  It is a joy to welcome Katherine Woodfine to our list with such a stunning Little Gem. Katherine’s love of research led her to stories of fascinating young women in the court of Marie Antoinette. In particular, the passionate talent and energy of Rose Bertin sparked Katherine’s imagination – so much so that the glimmer of an idea was transformed into this wonderful story as easily as a needle pulling thread …

We are thrilled to offer a stand-out illustrator for Rose. Kate Pankhurst is renowned for her portraits of female pioneers, and her spirited artwork perfectly evokes the life and times of Rose Bertin, a girl who secured her own dreams and enabled others to live theirs. Rose’s Dress of Dreams really is a gorgeous dream of a book – inspirational, engaging, and as well-crafted as the outrageous fashions it describes.
