LoveReading View on Antiracist Baby

A bold picture book urging everyone to create antiracist babies

This book has won several awards in the US, for tackling a difficult and contentious topic. Though to some extent I feel the book rather misses its mark – although the format and the pictures are aimed at toddlers, this is very much a book for carers, teachers and youth leaders to use to open discussions about race. The book simply gives 9 steps to becoming antiracist, all illustrated with big bold, colourful pictures, but in language that is most definitely going to need a mediator for a small child to understand.

I was disappointed by the lack of empathy exhibited, with no vocalising of love and respect for everyone, regardless of race.  The prompts at the end of the book for discussion and further exploration are very useful and could be the basis of many critical discussions in schools and other appropriate places. The author does acknowledge a great deal of the language used is difficult and provides a good glossary of the main terms used – always a benefit when dealing with terms that could be misinterpreted.

Antiracist Baby Synopsis

“Antiracist Baby is filled with the power to transcend, my friend. And doesn’t judge a book by its cover, but reads until … The End.”

Told in a gentle and accessible rhyme, and accompanied by vibrant illustrations from Ashley Kuashevsky, Antiracist Baby lays out nine clear tenets for parents, caregivers and educationalists to embrace in order to help develop the language they use when discussing injustices with young children. The tenets are:

  •  Open your eyes to all skin colours
  •  Use your words to talk about race
  •  Point at policies as the problem, not people
  •  Shout, 'There's nothing wrong with the people!'
  •  Celebrate all our differences
  •  Knock down the stack of cultural blocks
  •  Confess when being racist
  •  Grow to be an antiracist
  •  Believe we shall overcome racism

Perfect for sharing, and including thoughtful notes on how to address various topics and questions, Antiracist Baby is a must-read book to help us all become empowered in the fight for a more equitable society.
