Who Do You Think You Are? meets You Choose! in this inclusive picture book that opens up discussions about what makes us who we are. Perfect for ages 3+, this is a joyful celebration of all the pieces, places and people that make us who we are. It is a wonderful way to get children thinking about and learning about their own families, and also opening up discussions about all of the other pieces that come together to make us all unique: from our friends and food we eat, to activities we get up to and the places we go.
Families come in all shapes and sizes and this cheerful picturebook celebrates that beautifully. Lily-May is sad when she learns Dad is going to move away, but Mum and Dad reassure her it’s going to be alright and soon she’s listing the positives of her new situation. She has more time with Mum and then, when Peter moves in, more grandparents to play with not to mention more noise when his young sons come to stay too. There are still some wobbles, but nothing that Mum and Dad can’t sort, and the final pages capture her birthday party, much more fun with her big fantastic family. Though the book is described as ‘a story about parents separating’, the emphasis is strongly on that big new family formed as a result, and it’s so positive and encouraging it’s just the thing to share with young children going through the same as Lily-May or to help explain a friend’s or other young family member’s new situation. The rhyming text is fun to read aloud and Ali Pye’s clear, bright illustrations will prompt lots of conversations.

This lively little story will make perfect sense to young children who know just what it’s like to have a copycat admirer, and has some gentle messages too about sharing and playing together. Bella loves Anna so much that she wants to be just like her, and copies everything she does until they have a falling out. With no-one to play with, Bella teaches herself to skip and soon makes a new friend in Chloe. Then when Anna comes back, she can’t help but join in with the two of them. Ali Pye’s illustrations radiate humour and fun and her three little kittens are real characters. ~ Andrea Reece The Editor at Nosy Crow says: “Playground behaviour can be absolutely fascinating – it can be funny; it can be mean; it can be frankly adorable. And this brilliantly-observed book weaves together all of the highs, the lows and the dilemmas of playtime, with an end result that’s both sweetly funny and subtly reassuring.”

Mischief and magic make an excellent combination in this lively new series. Nixie is not a typical fairy – she’s generally grubby, finds it hard to do what she’s told, and somehow seems to attract trouble. Many young readers will recognise a kindred spirit! In book one, the fairies are getting ready for the annual Blossom Ball and Nixie is inadvertently causing mayhem as usual. Magic flies, tempers fray, and Nixie drops from the sky to crash land on goody-goody Adorabella not once but twice. Nicely told and with illustrations that match the bouncy text young readers will relish this helping of fairy fun. ~ Andrea Reece

Apart from it meaning me being enormously (but happily) surprised, it means being able to take huge pleasure in the fact that Ali's and my book is out there, having an unpredictable but entirely satisfactory life of its own. What more could we wish for?”
