Find out moreLu Fraser worked for many years in children's brand licensing before heading off to the country to start scribbling children's books in her wonky hut at the end of the garden. She is an incredibly exciting new picture book talent and The Viking Who Liked Icing is the first of four books contracted with Bloomsbury.
Lu lives in Hampshire with her husband and young daughter.
A warmly reassuring rhyming story (with a fun counting element!) about how it's ok to need a little alone time, from the author of the award-winning The Littlest Yak. Doug the camel is all alone and sometimes he wonders whether one is enough (it makes playing hide and seek terribly tough...). So when at first one, then two, then three, then four more camels turn up (followed by a whole camel herd), Doug delights in the possibilities all these new friends bring. But when Doug is 'all camelled out' from all the excitement, he takes just as much pleasure from the peace of being alone once again. Lu Fraser's warm, funny text is a delight to read out loud and is brilliantly illustrated by Sarah Warburton in the first book from this exciting new picture book partnership.
A lonely little witch casts a spell to magic up a friend. The final ingredient is furriness from a one-eyed teddy, and her crystal ball tells her there’s one at 14 Acorn Drive. Though she’s nervous about facing up to the teddy, off the Witchling sets. But to her surprise, there’s nothing scary about the teddy, or his little girl, just kindness. Could the spell have made her wish come true after all? Lu Fraser’s story is absolutely charming and Sarah Massini’s expressive illustrations are full of tenderness and subtlety. A dreamy story that perfectly describes something all children understand, the magic of friendship.
“Nut loved his sister and Leaf loved her brother, but everyone knew they were NOT like each other!” So the scene is set for Lu Fraser’s glorious rhyming ode to being yourself, a cheering, amusing tale that’s brilliantly brought to live by Mark McKinley’s simply stunning illustrations - they’re a veritable rainbow of energy and characterful detail. While adventurous Leaf loves to shoot her bow and swim icy lakes, Nut has no outdoor pursuits skills whatsoever. Rather, he prefers to bake, and harbours a secret passion for “slicing and dicing and mixing and whisking and really pink icing!” All of which means, come Viking Sports Day, Nut’s contribution is something of a disaster, until he hurls his cake in the Great Throwing Race and Chief Olaf recognises his culinary talents. Great fun, and there’s no arguing with its wise, warm-hearted message - “happiness comes when you just be yourself.”
